KCS teacher chosen for Korean Studies this summer

Amy MelendyAmy Melendy, a sixth grade social studies teacher at Cedar Bluff Middle School, has been selected by the Institute of International Education to travel to South Korea this summer for the study of Korean culture.

Melendy is one of about 100 teachers from across the United States who will participate in the fully-funded program for middle school and high school social studies teachers. (Read More)

KCS principals are among the state's top academic leaders

Princiapals honoredTwo Knox County elementary school principals are among 18 principals from across the state recognized by the Education Consumer's Foundation for their excellence in advancing students academically, as measured by Tennessee's Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS).

Terry Frost of Copper Ridge Elementary School and Elisa Luna of Inskip Elementary school led their schools to be in the top ten elementary schools in the state for the academic growth students experience from one school year to the next. Of 755 elementary schools in the state, Inskip is number seven for growth and Copper Ridge is number 10. (Read More)

 

Farragut teacher to attend Supreme Court Summer Institute

Frances Daniels, a teacher at Farragut High School, will travel to Washington, DC this June to attend the prestigious Supreme Court Summer Institute. After a highly competitive application process, 60 teachers were selected to participate this year.

The Institute, open to teachers who demonstrate outstanding ability in the field of law-related and civic education, is co-sponsored by Street Law, Inc. and the Supreme Court Historical Society. The Institute offers teachers the opportunity to study recent Supreme Court Cases in detail and learn innovative teaching methodology for conveying this information to students. Well know Supreme Court lawyers, reporters, and educators will be among the speakers and instructors for the Institute. Teachers will visit the Court and attend a reception there.

Upon returning home, teachers will be available to present workshops on the U.S. Supreme Court, and to meet with media to discuss how the new skills and information will apply in their classrooms.

 

Knox teacher wins Presidential Award for Excellence in Math, Science teaching

Bearden Middle School physical science teacher Julie Pepperman was one of 99 math and science teachers honored nationwide with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. (Details)

 

TEA picks two from KCS as administrator, teacher of the year from East Tennessee

The Tennessee Education Association has selected two Knox County educators to be recognized for their exceptional performance and has named them East Tennessee’s best administrator and educator for 2008. TEA has selected Elisa Luna, principal at Inskip Elementary School as the organization’s East Tennessee Administrator of the Year. It has also named Kristy Roop, a fourth grade teacher at Adrian Burnett Elementary School, East Tennessee Educator of the Year. (Read More)

Middle School teacher's lesson plan selected among best in nation

A Knox County Schools social studies teacher has been recognized by the History Channel and the Civil War Preservation Trust for having one of the best Civil War related lesson plans in the nation for 2008. (Read More)

 

Carter Middle assistant principal is state's assistant principal of the year

A Knox County Schools assistant principal has been chosen Tennessee Assistant Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NCASSP). Susan Hutsell, assistant principal at Carter Middle School, was honored in Nashville at the Tennessee Association of Secondary School Principals conference and in San Antonio during the national conference. Dr. James McIntyre assumes duties as Director of Schools

Dr. James McIntyreDr. James McIntyre, Chief Operating Officer of Boston Public Schools, assumed his duties as the new Director of Schools for Knox County Monday, Juy 7th.

McIntyre, age 40, is married and has two sons. As Chief operating officer of the Boston Public Schools, he managed a district with 56,000 students and an $800M budget. Dr. McIntyre has a Doctorate in public policy from the University of Massachusetts, a master of urban affairs, Boston University, a master's in education administration, Canisius College, and a bachelor's in English, Boston College.
