Curriculum-Based Measurement

Reading Norms

Reading is measured by listening to a child read graded passages aloud for 1 minute and calculating the number of words read correct per minute.  Research has consistently shown that such reading fluency measures provide a highly reliable and valid measure of general reading achievement, including comprehension, for most students.

For example, a student at the 50th percentile in first grade read 30 words correctly per minute during the winter benchmark.  Such a student also achieved a rate of increase (ROI) of 1.4 words read correctly per week from the fall to spring benchmarks.  The Number Column (Num) refers to the number of students administered that particular probe.

Num = Number of Students  WRC = Words Read Correctly
 ROI = Rate Of Improvement

ROI is Spring Score minus Fall Score (or Winter minus Fall) divided by 36 weeks (or 18 weeks)

A fifth grade student at the 50th percentile obtained 38 correct digits during the winter benchmark.
