Get Ready to Power It Down for the Environment and the Wounded Warriors Project
Knox Green Team promotes national effort to create responsible energy consumption
Would you like something really easy you can do to support both our environment and our veterans? Well here it is. The Knox Green Team is asking you to participate in Power It Down Day on August 27th. Register to participate at www.poweritdown.org. Then when you leave work on Friday the 27th, turn off your computer, your monitor, your printer and any other peripherals you have.
That’s it. The day before the event, everyone who has registered will receive a reminder e-mail from the Power It Down website. The organizers of Power It Down will make a donation to the Wounded Warriors Project.
This is the third annual event put on by information technology industry leaders. Last year, 5,600 people signed up and Power It Down sponsors donated $45,000 to the Wounded Warriors Project. This year’s sponsors are Citrix, Intel, HP and GTSI.
This concept is a perfect fit for the Knox Green Team’s Take 10 energy efficiency pledge component that asks team members to “Switch Off.” Power It Down Day, like the Green Team, is designed to challenge individuals to create a daily habit of responsible energy consumption. It is estimated that one computer, monitor and printer use about 13 kilowatts overnight. Last year’s Power It Down estimated the savings from their participants was 73,000 kilowatts, or enough energy to power the homes of 77 U.S. families for an entire month.
While Power It Down Day is specifically targeting government agencies and their supporting industries, the Knox Green Team is urging everyone to participate in this environmentally important day. So join the Knox Green Team for Power It Down Day and register at www.poweritdown.org.
The Knox Green Team works to educate and support citizens to make personal environmentally sustainable lifestyle changes that will positively affect our shared environment. You can become a member of the Knox Green Team and pledge to Take 10 for the Environment at www.knoxgreenteam.org.

The Zoomobile engages students by bringing live animals into schools to help them learn and retain concepts such as habitats, adaptations, classification, predator/prey relationships and much more. Up-close encounters with wildlife and biofacts (skins, bones, etc.) help schools meet curriculum requirements in a memorable way. All of the programs offered meet TN state standards, T-cap and Gateway objectives across the curriculum. Programs for single classrooms, team programs (2 classes together) and assemblies for entire grades or schools are available.
All programs include a visit from at least three live animals. A wide variety of grade-appropriate topics for preschool through high school are available to support your curriculum. Classroom programs are interactive and up-close. Team programs can cover most of the same topics as the classroom programs with more students, but are less interactive. Assembly programs are a great introduction or wrap-up to an animal unit for a whole grade. For prices, scheduling and more information visit www.knoxville-zoo.org/zoomobile.html, e-mail zoomobile@knoxville-zoo.org or call 637-5331 ext. 371.

Film Historian Jeff Gordon to Discuss Crafting Biographies at Guild Meeting
Jeff Gordon, Publicity Coordinator, The Knoxville Writers’ Guild
Author and film historian Jeff Gordon will be discussing his new biography, Foxy Lady, which chronicles the life and death of movie star Lynn Bari at the Thursday, September 2 meeting of the Knoxville Writers’ Guild. Gordon will address the processes and difficulties of writing and constructing authorized biographies, as well as detail his fascinating correspondences with the late Bari and others.
The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. at the Laurel Theater, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Street (in Fort Sanders). A $1 donation is requested at the door. The building is handicapped accessible.
Foxy Lady is Gordon’s first book. His passion for cinema and film history, along with his interest in writing, spurred him to embark on his most intensive project so far. Beginning in 1989, Gordon assumed the daunting task of crafting the authorized biography of golden-age actress Lynn Bari. Along the way, Gordon had extensive conversations with Bari and numerous interviews with dozens of Bari’s family members, friends and professional associates. Gordon’s correspondence and friendship with Bari began in 1986, and by June 1989, he began piecing together the story of Bari’s life and career in the hopes of writing a biography. Bari’s death later that same year convinced Gordon to add a new dimension to the biography by including the perspectives of those close to Bari. Gordon calls Foxy Lady “an endeavor of vast dimension, and profound meaningfulness” and “the most special project of (his) life.”
Gordon describes his first cinema experiences as those of a ten-year-old boy visiting various revival houses in New York City, the city in which he grew up. “In these musty old theaters I delighted in W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers and Busby Berkeley’s chorines. I also cried my little eyes out watching David Copperfield and sat breathless at screenings of Hitchcock’s movies.”
He graduated from New York University in the 1970s, where he earned degrees in Film Production and Cinema Studies. He credits his mentor, William K. Everson, the dean of film historians, as one of his primary motivators in his film-writing career. Following his student career at NYU, Gordon spent time as a film critic for two community weeklies in New York City and managing Jagarts, a retail business and rental archive concerned with American film history through graphic art, photography and publicity. He also presided at the helm of a cinema society in New York City for seven years and since 2004 has been running a film group in Knoxville, TN, where he currently resides.
Gordon’s work has also appeared in Classic Images, Films of the Golden Age, Focus on the Film and various other entertainment-oriented publications. His talent and dedication as both a writer and film historian have not gone unnoticed. Book critic Laura Wagner of Classic Images believes Gordon was the right author for the arduous task of authoring Foxy Lady. “In Jeff’s hands, I know that, finally, Lynn Bari will get her due and we will learn the circumstances of her stalled career. I know of the hard work and love that Jeff has put into this.”
For his September Writers’ Guild appearance, Jeff Gordon will chronicle his inspiring and fascinating journey over the span of two decades in authoring Foxy Lady, while also providing insights about the process of writing and gathering material for an authorized biography.
