Superintendent to deliver "State of the Schools" address
Dr. Jim McIntyre, Superintendent of the Knox County Schools, will deliver a “State of the Schools” Report and Address on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. at Gresham Middle School. School Board Chairman Thomas Deakins, County Mayor Tim Burchett and Great Schools Partnership President Buzz Thomas will also share their perspectives on public education in our community. The event is open to the public.
This inaugural event, co-hosted by the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce and the Knox County Council PTA, will provide an overview of academic progress in the Knox County Schools toward the goals outlined in its district-wide Strategic Plan. The Knox County Board of Education approved the plan, entitled Excellence for All Children, in 2009. The report will also highlight the additional work necessary to provide our students with an excellent education in today’s increasingly competitive global environment. In addition, the event will provide attendees with information on how to best support public education in Knox County.
“While our achievements will be highlighted, we will also look at some of the most critical initiatives that will help accelerate our effectiveness and improve student academic success,” Dr. McIntyre said. “We should be proud of our progress, but also recognize the significant effort and resources required to achieve our very ambitious goal of Excellence for All Children.”

In the movies:
The school's football/soccer stadium housed the football scenes from the movie "October Sky', the gymnasium housed the science fair from the same movie and part of Gresham's hallways were transformed into a hospital for the movie.
Students helping with presentation
As well as a report on the state of education in Knox County, the address provides a hands-on learning experience for the students. Students from Gresham, Fulton, Austin-East, and South-Doyle are helping with the inaugural "State of the Schools" address.
Fulton's School of Communications photography, Radio Broadcast, and TV Production students will assist in the setup and production of the event.
Austin-East and South-Doyle Culinary Class students are helping with food preparation for the reception following the address.
Gresham students will serve as guides, will perform small instrumental ensembles in three different section of the hallway before the program, and a choral ensemble will perform during the program. Gresham Beta Club officers will lead the pledge.
